Passing the Torch: Step One, Communicate.

Every family farm eventually faces the question of what comes next. This blog explores how our family is beginning to answer that question — through open conversations about transition, conservation, and stewardship. I’m grateful to my parents for recognizing early on that these conversations matter. While topics like inheritance are often treated as uncomfortable or private, addressing them early has allowed us to approach the future with intention rather than assumption.

We don’t have all the answers yet. But we are communicating — and that feels like the right place to start.

So where do we go from here? There are countless directions we could take, which can make it difficult to choose just one. This space will explore ideas at the intersection of farming, technology, AI, and the digital world. We’ll go down rabbit holes. Some ideas may feel unconventional, or even far-fetched — and that’s okay. What’s the harm in learning? With today’s tools, especially AI, it’s easier and more affordable to explore and vet ideas before committing time and resources to them. Some paths may lead to dead ends, but each one teaches us something.

Along the way, we’ll also showcase digital content created and curated by each generation of our family. From recipes to photography, NFTs to podcasts, we’ll share a wide range of perspectives and skills. At times, these pieces may feel disparate — but every generation has something to contribute, and every generation has something to learn. Together, we represent more than 477 years of lived experience.
